Located in Villa di Tirano at the base of the Rhetic Alps and bordered by terraced vineyards, Contrada Beltramelli offers its warm hospitality within a typical rustic setting.
Thanks to a major refurbishment and conservative building renovation project carried out during the course of 2011-2012, you can now take a veritable dive into the past and immerse yourself in the rural traditions of these mountains.
Today Contrada Beltramelli offers you INTEGRATED, MULTI-BUILDING ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES , A TASTE OF THE LOCAL CULTURE/A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE by showcasing a number of permanent collections and temporary exhibitions from various artists and FOOD AND WINE TOURS, as well as CONFERENCE FACILITIES and CATERING services.

La storia della Contrada

The Contrada dates to the early 1600s; for centuries it was a densely inhabited and busy hamlet, however the radical lifestyle changes following World War II lead to a steady drop in the population. This was further exacerbated by the expansion of settlements towards the valley and onto former agricultural land.
As a result the Contrada lost its people and all that remained was the empty silence within the decaying walls and roofs. The typical constructions of this area were the “masun”. This is the name given to the rural buildings constructed long ago; buildings that incorporated a mix of residential and agricultural uses. The structures were in part utilised for sheltering livestock, drying hay and bedding straw, stacking firewood and storing food supplies and only a few rooms were actually used as living quarters. Normally a family would have the use of a kitchen and one or at most two bedrooms. The bedrooms were not heated and the only source of heat came from the kitchen hearth or from the animals within the stables.
This is why folks would often gather in the stables on cold winter evenings to chat and pass the time together. The stables would normally be found on the ground floor, making removal of the animals’ waste materials easier; the haylofts, with their sizeable doors, were located on the upper floor and featured wooden mezzanine levels at different heights, serving to store the season’s various crops.
For more than forty years the contrade were left to their inescapable destiny, but now, after so long, we can see how this time has not been lost. The buildings have remained unchanged, as if time had stopped.

Un piccolo mondo antico

Upon entering the contrada and giving yourself a moment to imagine your surroundings, you can easily envisage how life in the country must have been. In the courtyard there would be various mounds of manure; one mound for each individual family, fruit of the livestock each family was able to own.
The air would be thick with the smell of the country and there would be swarms of flies in the courtyard, especially during the summer months. From the windows of the various kitchens one would spot a thin trail of smoke rising up from the hearths, which did not always have a chimney, and hear the clamour of the inhabitants. Children noisily running up and down the wooden stairs or sitting silently in a corner with a bowl of cornmeal mush and milk in their laps, content with whatever little their parents were able to give them. Folks would call out to each other from their windows and they would gladly offer overnight accommodation to passers-by in their stables. You have to imagine the roughness of the clothing and the poverty of the people to understand the true significance of the walls that enclose this courtyard.
These are walls, vaulted ceilings and roofs that were constructed and maintained in a time of utter poverty by ordinary people, whose names we don’t even know. People that day after day removed and remodelled the earth around them by hand. They created our history and we cannot remain indifferent to this legacy.
